Transactions / Re: Downloading transactions from a .csv file
« on: October 15, 2018, 02:05:34 PM »
Roy, wanted to followup on this question.  Our latest update of Investment Account Manager (now v3.1.4) includes the ability to import transaction data in a csv file. Users can now import a transaction file in csv format when creating a new portfolio, or for appending newer activity to an existing portfolio.

The Investment Account Manager 3 Individual (IAM) User License allows our customers to install IAM on both a primary computer, as well as a second backup computer.  It also allows for the reinstallation of IAM in the event of computer malfunction, or installation to a new replacement computer.  The steps below can be used for reinstall/new install/second install.

  • First, make certain you have a recent backup of your current IAM3 Individual data.  This is required for new installation/reinstallation. Your current installation of IAM3 must reflect an active support policy (if after 1 year of the date of the original purchase). If you have yet to make a recent backup, start IAM3 and use the File Menu | Backup Data choice.

  • Backup your data files, which includes your current support license activation, to a removable/portable drive, i.e. a plug-in drive.  Set this aside for reinstallation.

  • Next, download from our web site the most recent IAM3 trial version for reinstall/new install/second install purposes to the destination computer.

  • Start the trial version and while in demo mode with the supplied demo data showing, select the File Menu | Restore Data choice.  Use the button labeled 'Select Backup' to locate the proper drive letter for the removable/portfolio drive used to make the backup.

  • Selected the most recently create backup file.  Then verify all your prior portfolios are listed for the restore process.  Select all portfolios and also be sure to select the check box to include the backup asset library. Then select the option to restore all.

That's all there is to it. If your backup includes an active support policy, the restore process will migrate all your backup data, as well as convert the demo to a full version, under your original user license.

Perhaps the best way is to refer to your past broker statements that coincide to the same calendar month end historic date you are creating.  Note: the historic prices are only required if you are trying to derive IRR performance for such date ranges.  If this is not important to you, you can simply start storing historic dates currently, and going forward.

Thank you for your question....

Many users simply start with IAM3 by downloading their current holdings from their broker accounts, editing these to reflect accurate tax basis, and then going forward, downloading ongoing future activity.  For these users of IAM3, entering historical data and past performance is not of concern.  Rather, these users prefer to just set up their portfolio(s) to reflect current holdings, and then tracking activity and performance going forward from there.  By the way, you can also initially create your portfolios by manually entering just your current tax lots instead of downloading if your broker is not listed in our supported broker list.

Alternatively, if you do want to measure performance based on all past historical activity, have a record of your past transactions, then you can create your portfolio(s) from inception.  While this will require you to work thru past yearly broker statements from the start of the account, it does offer a more comprehensive accounting of your holdings from inception.

I suggest you visit our website video tutorials, reviewing the methods on the quick portfolio setup methods, as well as the steps for creating a historical accurate portfolio.  the link is:  https://www.investmentaccountmanager.com/video-tutorials.php

You can't link these as a single transaction in the IAM3 activity ledger, however, when running the performance report, you can filter to just include these two securities to see the results for gain/loss and irr.

You can add this as a separate income entry in the transactions activity ledger using the income transaction type.

Importing Existing Portfolio Data / Re: Import Prices

John,

It sounds as if the leading zero was the issue in your file, but once corrected on your end, the import worked ok, so you should be all set.  If you have add'l questions, you can email our tech support team directly: techsupport@investmentaccountmanager.com

We've recently released a major upgrade to our award winning Investment Account Manager Professional portfolio management software program.  This new version includes more comprehensive and robust features, and we're confident you'll be impressed.

Also, our prospective customers have suggested to us that the 30 day free trial period to learn and use the IAM3 Professional should be extended.  We thank those demo users who suggested this to us, and wanted to let you know we have indeed extended the free trial period - now to 60 days!

If you are still searching for a portfolio management software program for use with clients, family offices, foundations, or other professional purposes, select the link below to download our latest version.

Suggestions / Re: Asset Allocation Reporting
« on: November 13, 2017, 01:36:12 PM »
Dan,

We already offer a 'stock size' allocation as you are requesting for level 2.  That is, when you are on the home page | level 2 allocation tab, you'll notice the add'l tab for sector/size allocations.  You can then use the radio button to choose the view by either sector, or size. You can also review these from the reports menu | level 2 allocation reports.

Our soon to be released new Professional v3 offers the ability for developed and emerging markets.

Hope this helps.  If you have add'l questions, please contact our support team directly at: techsupport@investmentaccountmanager.com

Transactions / Re: correction of 401(k) over-witholding
« on: November 09, 2017, 09:10:05 AM »
We don't have any such transaction entry...but you can use the sale activity since this is in a non taxable 401k, so the gains/losses are not relevant.  Or, perhaps more easily, you could simply delete the original activity, and re-enter correctly.

If you have add'l questions, please let us know.

Ed,

Sounds as if something has changed with your broker access.  Are you able to download, if you do a test using the portfolio setup wizard, your current holdings from Fidelity?  We haven't heard of any issues from other users, and since this did work as recently as later August, might be a change due to your accounts/fidelity.  As for Schwab, they recently changed their servers, and are aware of the issue.  They are working on solutions for all Schwab customers.  If you contact them to whitelist your IP address, should work faster for you until they have a global fix.

Kevin,

Use the edit menu | transfer a security choice to transfer each position from the IRA portfolio to the 401k portfolio...

Roy,

Yes, we have had other users tell us they have found such tools on the internet, and converted .csv to ofx for import into IAM.
